Marriage License Facts

A New York State marriage license is valid for 60 days, but the couple may not get married within 24 hours of obtaining the license. The City Clerk offices provide the applying couple with the marriage license, and the couple will give this license to the Marriage Officiant, in most cases this is the Reverend, priest, or judge. At the time of marriage, the couple and two witnesses must provide suitable pictured identifications before they can sign the license in the Reverend’s presents. Only the Reverend may complete the license. Once the license is recorded, the married couple will receive a marriage certificate in the mail from the city within a few weeks.

Within the boroughs of the City of New York only an officially registered Marriage Officiant can marry a couple. In most other counties of this state and surrounding states, Reverends are qualified to perform marriages without being officially registered.

There is absolutely no white out or scratch offs allowed on the marriage license. This document will be microfilmed and the optical scanner will not copy the marriage document with white out or scratch offs. Do not write on the license until instructed to do so by the Reverend and with the black-ink pen he provides.
